‘A meditation on scent, material and ritual’ is how Sandra Fuzier and Alexandre Piffaut describe their exploration of fragrance for homeware brand MAD et LEN. Founded in 2007 and named after the sensory madeleine scene in Marcel Proust’s ‘Remembrance of Things Past’, the duo’s foray into artisanal-grade scent was prompted by their move to the rural commune of Saint-Julien-du-Verdon, trading their metropolitan life in Paris in favour of a connection to France’s perfume capital, Grasse. Today, their darkly romantic formulas are composed by an in-house chemist using essential oils extracted from flowers, spices and wood – some of which can take up to two years to mature – then incorporated into candles and mineral potpourri. The result is a selection of totemic scents of unrivalled purity, presented in iron cases sourced from blacksmiths across Morocco and Mauritania.
